Set in the splendour of the Barle Valley, Simonsbath is set in the heart of what the locals refer to as “Exmoor Proper”. Simonsbath House stood alone for over 150 years before the small hamlet developed in the 19th Century, with the local Church, St Lukes, built in 1856, presiding over the largest Parish in Somerset 56 square miles but with only 75 houses.
There are many great walks from Simonsbath, notably down the River Barle and north through Ashcombe onto the high moor, overlooking the magnificent Exmoor coastline.

Simonsbath Festival.

Sunday 4th May to Saturday 23rd June 2013

Simonsbath Festival 2013 is a community venture offering an exciting mix of classical, folk, jazz, opera and world music, as well as talks, workshops, outdoor activities and an art exhibition.  This year the festival takes place from Saturday May 4 to Saturday June 22.

The festival has just been awarded a £6,000 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund to revive the traditional music and songs of Exmoor.  It will work with folk and community arts organisation Wren Music on the project "Songs from the Exmoor Forest", organising workshops for local schools and community groups to learn the music and songs from their collection.

Wren musicians will perform some of the music and songs for the festival's May Day celebrations on Bank Holiday Monday May 6.  Then, after holding a series of workshops throughout the festival period, they will be joined by local children and other members of the community for a concert performance on Saturday June 22 to mark Midsummer and bring the festival to a close.

While celebrating the cultural heritage of Exmoor with “Songs from the Exmoor Forest”, the festival has invited top musicians from abroad for a celebration of the musical traditions of other cultures too.  With affordable ticket prices and free admission to some events, the organisers hope that everyone will find something to enjoy during the six-week festival.
