Simonsbath Festival 2013 is a community venture offering an exciting mix of classical, folk, jazz, opera and world music, as well as talks, workshops, outdoor activities and an art exhibition. This year the festival takes place from Saturday May 4 to Saturday June 22.
The festival has just been awarded a £6,000 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund to revive the traditional music and songs of Exmoor. It will work with folk and community arts organisation Wren Music on the project "Songs from the Exmoor Forest", organising workshops for local schools and community groups to learn the music and songs from their collection.
Wren musicians will perform some of the music and songs for the festival's May Day celebrations on Bank Holiday Monday May 6. Then, after holding a series of workshops throughout the festival period, they will be joined by local children and other members of the community for a concert performance on Saturday June 22 to mark Midsummer and bring the festival to a close.
While celebrating the cultural heritage of Exmoor with “Songs from the Exmoor Forest”, the festival has invited top musicians from abroad for a celebration of the musical traditions of other cultures too. With affordable ticket prices and free admission to some events, the organisers hope that everyone will find something to enjoy during the six-week festival.
